Weekend Update: Pineapple Express, Mortal Sin & Matt B Fret Board

It was  a busy week in the wood shop.  Mike has 4 guitars in process, one being spec-ed out right now and a bass coming up in the very near future.

Matt B’s electronics have arrived and his build will be back on the table this coming week.  Mike and Matt have also settled on a fret board design, so Doug at Parable will be working on that as well.

The Pineapple Express and the Mortal Sin Prototype are both just about ready for finish.  Dal’s Pineapple Express was chambered, has the Tasmanian Blackwood top installed and has been routed out.  The Mortal Sin was contoured and routed.  Here are some images of last weeks work:

Mike Ramps Up 2009 Guitar Production

Mike has just finished re-allocating shop space, reducing the area formerly held by metal fab and paint staging to allow more room and better efficiency for his woodworking equipment.  Mike is producing 2 new builds right now and is expecting to produce several complete customs each month this year.  In addition to Matt B’s commission, he is building the prototype for the first double cut away Mortal Sin.  Mike is also working with a client for then next few “War Plane Tribute” instruments.

Build Your Own Electric Guitar!! 5 Day Class with Mike Learn!!

Learn Lutherie!! Build Your Own Electric Guitar in a 5 Day Class with Mike Learn!!

You asked for it, and now you got it! Mike is offering a 5-day, action-packed, non-stop, wood-working extravaganza here at his Colorado Studio! During this course you will build your own dream electric guitar!

The class project will be a solid body with bolt on neck, however throughout the week Mike will demo dozens of different techniques and construction options. You can choose to build one of Mike’s standard models (Rock Caster, ICON or Flak Jacket) OR design your own body, headstock and truss rod cover! If you choose to design your own, you will need to have a good idea of what shape you want when you come to class, and the design will be subject to approval to ensure that your instrument will be properly balanced with good sound. You will also learn to route your guitar to hold the hardware and pick up(s) configuration of your choice.

You will learn:

  • how a guitar works
  • the basic geometry of an instrument and how to be creative within these guidelines
  • how to apply your knowledge to plan your instrument
  • how to choose good tonal wood
  • techniques for solid, chambered and semi hollow bodies
  • how to work with patterns and jigs
  • complete fret work
  • set up
  • wiring
  • how to choose your hardware (what works with what and why)
  • how to finish your instrument with natural wood or custom paint options
  • and much much more!!

We will supply all materials to build the body, neck and fingerboards including fret wire and truss rods. You will need to provide your bridge, pickup(s), hardware, tuners and strings.
